POINT OF INTEREST

MINT Museum of Toys

26 Seah St., Singapore, 188382

The MINT (Moment of Imagination and Nostalgia with Toys) Museum of Toys opened in 2006 as the world’s first museum dedicated entirely to toys and children’s memorabilia. The private museum is owned by Mr. Chang Yang Fa, a citizen of Singapore and passionate collector of toys.

The basics

The MINT Museum of Toys houses the largest collection of vintage, rare, and one-of-a kind toys in the world—about 50,000 objects collected from 40 different countries. Toys on display run the gamut from the familiar (Batman and Popeye) to more obscure pieces from Europe and Japan. If you’re looking for something specific, you’ll find collectibles on Level 2; the Childhood Favorites collection on the third floor; an exhibit space dedicated to characters on Level 4; and outer space-themed toys on Level 5. The rooftop and basement both house enamel sign galleries.

Things to know before you go

  • This museum isn’t just for kids; adults enjoy looking back at nostalgic items from childhood as well.

  • The museum is wheelchair-friendly, and wheelchair users will find an accessible restroom on Level 5.

  • Photography is welcome inside the museum.

How to get there

The museum is located in central Singapore, within a 15-minute walk of several MRT stations: City Hall, Bugis, Bras Basah, and Esplanade. Local buses stop nearby at the Raffles Hotel.

When to get there

The museum is open daily (but is closed the first day of Lunar New Year). Free tours are offered each Wednesday afternoon, providing context about key pieces in the collection and the history of the founder and building.

Best museums for kids

Along with the MINT Museum of Toys, Singapore has a number of other family-friendly museums. Kids who are curious about aviation love the collection of planes and helicopters at the Air Force Museum, while the S’pore Discovery Centre boasts interactive exhibits catering to a range of diverse interests. The Lee Kong Chian Natural History Museum is the go-to for dinosaur bones and other fossils, while the lotus-shaped ArtScience Museum explores the intersection of art and science, with permanent exhibits geared toward younger visitors.
