POINT OF INTEREST

Minnehaha Falls

Minneapolis, Minnesota

One of America’s best urban waterfalls, Minnehaha Falls is also one of Minneapolis’s most popular spots. Part of the nearly 200-acre (80-hectare) Minnehaha Park, the falls cascade some 53 feet (16 meters) over limestone bluffs, with trails and overlooks for easy viewing. And while Minnehaha Falls may seem like a warm-weather adventure, when frozen, they’re a great backdrop to that cup of hot cocoa.

Minnehaha Park lies just off the banks of the Mississippi River, southeast of downtown Minneapolis. A network of trails snakes through the park, though most visitors will beeline for Minnehaha Falls, the park’s claim to fame. From the main parking lot, it’s a short, easy walk to the falls, which can be viewed from above at the “Grand Lookout” or from below, down a set of stone stairs.

Any good highlights tour of Minneapolis will include a stop at Minnehaha Falls and Minnehaha Park, which, thanks to the falls, is one of the most popular parks in the state. Self-guided audio tours can also deepen your experience of this natural spot, which follows a former course of the Mississippi.

  • Parking is available for a fee—the lots can fill up on warm-weather weekends.

  • The main trails are paved and stroller/wheelchair accessible; the side trails coursing throughout the park are unpaved.

  • Restrooms are available near the main parking lot.

Most visitors will get to Minnehaha Falls by car, parking in one of the paid lots. On summer weekends, these lots can fill up, so come early if that’s your plan (or park at the Fort Snelling Park and Ride Lot, if needed). Otherwise, take the Metro Blue Line to the 50th Street/Minnehaha Station, and the falls are just a short walk away.

Whatever season you’re in Minneapolis, you’ll want to see the falls. They’re strongest in the spring, which can be quite the experience. Summer can be good, too, though you’ll be battling crowds. By autumn, the cascade is likely slowing, though it’ll be surrounded by fantastic fall foliage. And as long as you have a warm coat and boots, a winter visit can be magical and serene.

Minnehaha Park has far more to do than catch a waterfall and wander some trails. Visitors will find outdoor sculptures, manicured gardens, and historic sites like the John H. Stevens House (the first authorized house on the west bank of the Mississippi River). In the summer, kids and adults alike can enjoy the falls’ wading pool to splash and cool off.
