Melbourne Sports & Aquatic Centre

30 Aughtie Drive, Albert Park, Melbourne, Victoria, 3206

Completed in 1997, the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre (MSAC) is one of the largest athletic centers in the southern hemisphere. Host of the 2006 Commonwealth Games and the 2007 FINA World Swimming Championships, the center caters to both serious swimmers and recreational users—it’s home to aquatic facilities ranging from indoor and outdoor Olympic swimming pools to a steam room and sauna, and has other sports facilities as well.

The basics

In addition to the 164-foot (50-meter) competition pools, Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre (MSAC) boasts an 82-foot (25-meter) lap pool, a multi-purpose pool, a wave pool with a toddlers' play area, a water slide, diving boards, and a hydrotherapy pool., as well as a spa, sauna, and steam room. It’s also home to one of only three FlowRider machines in Australia, which creates a static wave of water that gives riders a similar experience to wakeboarding or surfing. The center is sometimes included in sports-themed tours of Melbourne.

Things to know before you go

  • MSAC is a cashless facility, so you’ll need to pay using a contactless payment method.

  • Admission prices vary depending on whether you want to swim, visit the gym, relax in the spa, or simply visit as a spectator.

  • There’s on-site parking if you plan on driving to MSAC.

How to get there

Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre is conveniently located on two Melbourne tram routes—it’s stop 129 on the 96 route between St. Kilda Beach and East Brunswick, and stop number 131 on route 12, which travels between the center and south Melbourne.

When to get there

MSAC and its on-site gym are open from early morning until late evening Monday through Friday, while hours are shorter on the weekends. The center hosts a range of different sporting events, and you can find the full programme on their website under “Events.”

What else you can do at MASC

Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre offers more than water-based activities. Other facilities include a 10-court squash facility with a glass show court; a 12-court badminton stadium; 27 table-tennis tables; a 10-court basketball facility with a 1,800-seat show court, and three volleyball courts. You can rent these by the hour, or come and watch some of the many amateur and professional sporting events that take place here.
