Mel Fisher Maritime Museum
200 Greene St., Key West, FL, 33040
Treacherous waters off Key West have brought down ships carrying gold and silver for centuries. The Mel Fisher Maritime Heritage Museum puts those treasures on display, alongside cannons, swords, and other artifacts dredged from the bottom of the sea. Wrecks from the 1700s and 1800s are the heart of the museum's collection.
The basics
The Mel Fisher Maritime Heritage Museum preserves the seafaring history of Key West, which still attracts treasure hunters from around the world. Tours of the on-site Conservation Lab are available on weekdays; check the website for hours.
Things to know before you go
- The museum is great for history buffs and lovers of seafaring lore.
- The building is wheelchair and stroller accessible, with wheelchairs available for use.
- Certified service animals are welcome in the museum.
How to get there
The Mel Fisher Maritime Heritage Museum is located at 200 Greene Street, close to top attractions including Mallory Square and Mile Marker Zero. As with most central Key West destinations, parking is limited and streets are narrow, so it’s best to avoid driving if possible. Hop-on, hop-off trolley tours stop nearby, and the free Duval Loop Shuttle also stops at the museum.
When to get there
The museum is open daily and offers Conservation Lab tours twice a day on weekdays (except for holidays); call ahead or check the website for updated tour times.
Other shipwreck sites in Key West
The Mel Fisher Maritime Heritage Museum isn’t the only place to find sunken gold. Another favorite is the Key West Shipwreck Treasure Museum, which recreates a 19th-century wrecker’s warehouse. Or, with snorkeling or scuba gear, you can see the wrecks themselves on the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary Shipwreck Trail, a series of nine historic shipwrecks including a 3-masted sailing ship, a former US Navy destroyer, and a Spanish treasure ship sunk off Indian Key.Â
