Media Harbor (MedienHafen)
Zollhof 8, Düsseldorf, Rhine River, 40219
Dusseldorf’s historic harbor was given an impressive facelift during the 1990s, transforming the bleak silos and shipping warehouses into a lively cultural hub known as the Media Harbor (MedienHafen). Named for the many media and telecoms headquarters that sprung around the waterfront, it’s now one of the city’s most stylish districts.
The basics
The new Media Harbor (MedienHafen) is the hallmark of modern-day Dusseldorf and a mainstay on the sightseeing circuit, whether you come to admire the architectural landmarks, take in the views along the Rhine River, or party into the early hours. Enjoy a scenic walking or Segway tour that takes in the Rhine River Promenade and the Media Harbor, visit independently as part of a hop-on hop-off bus tour, or pass by on a river cruise.
For the best views, head up to the observation deck at the Rhine Tower (Rheinturm) or cross the Media Harbor Bridge (Brucke am Medianhafen), which links the south end of the Rhine River Promenade with Rheinstrand Park.
Things to know before you go
Architecture enthusiasts won’t want to miss the Media Harbor—it’s home to Dusseldorf’s most unique modern landmarks, including works by world-renowned architect Frank Gehry.
The Media Harbor is also a popular spot for foodies and partygoers and home to some of the city’s most upmarket restaurants, cafes, bars, and nightclubs.
Most of the Media Harbor is easily accessible for wheelchairs and strollers.
How to get there
The Media Harbor sits at the south end of the Rhine River Promenade at the mouth of Dusseldorf Harbor. It’s a scenic about 20-minute walk from the Old Town (Altstadt), following the riverside promenade. Alternatively, ride the tram to the D-Franziusstraße stop, from where it’s a 2-minute walk to the harbor.
When to get there
The Media Harbor is equally impressive day and night, so swing by during the day to admire the architecture or arrive after dark to experience the electric nightlife. The district’s top attraction, the Rhine Tower, is open daily from 10am through midnight.
Architectural highlights of the Media Harbor
The Media Harbor is characterized by its ultra-modern architecture, which includes sweeping glass-fronted office blocks, striking public artworks, and a series of wave-inspired Gehry Buildings (Neue Zollhof) that form a sleek silhouette along the waterfront. The harbor’s most recognizable landmark is the Rhine Tower, Dusseldorf’s tallest building designed by architect H. Deilmann, while other notable works include the colorful Innside by Melia Aparthotel and the Energie-Pyramide by sculptors Thomas Schonauer and Berend F. Van.
