Marechal Carmona Park (Gandarinha Park)
Praceta Domingos D’Avilez Av. da República, Cascais, Portugal
Quiet, shaded trails lead through the grounds of Marechal Carmona Park in the south of Cascais. The park is bordered by grand old buildings, including the Museu Condes de Castro Guimarães, but at its heart lies sheltered areas with picnic tables, sculptures, and open lawns. Chickens, ducks, and peacocks wander about the park—as do tourists seeking views of Santa Marta Beach.
The basics
Picnics and strolls in the shade are what bring most people to Marechal Carmona Park, unless they’re cutting through to reach the Casa das Histórias Paula Rego or the Santa Maria House Museum. You can also explore the park after seeing the arts and artifacts inside the Museu Condes de Castro Guimarães on the park's edge.
You might catch sight of the park on sightseeing tours of Cascais, but you will probably need to come on your own to explore fully. How long you spend here depends on your plans; while you could spend a quick 10 minutes strolling through, it can easily stretch to longer if you stop for a picnic or to enjoy the peace of the park.
Things to know before you go
The park is ideal for families with young children looking to burn off some energy.
Parking lots next to the park have electric vehicle charging stations.
Amenities include a small coffee shop, playground, and public restrooms.
The park hosts a Christmas village each year.
How to get there
The entrance to Marechal Carmona Park is by the Museu Condes de Castro Guimarães on the park’s north side. Walk or cycle to the park from the town center or other local attractions—it shouldn’t take more than 15 minutes. If arriving by car, park in the large lot off Republic Avenue on the park’s northwest side.
When to get there
Marechal Carmona Park is open daily throughout the year, although the park stays open a little later into the evening during the summer months. People generally come to the park to escape the heat in summer, such as by swimming at Santa Marta Beach, so sunny afternoons are usually the busiest. Come in the morning for the best chance of a peaceful wander around and for the beach to be quiet.
Places to visit around Marechal Carmona Park
The Museu Condes de Castro Guimarães is just one of the many Cascais attractions surrounding Marechal Carmona Park. South of the park, you’ll find the Santa Maria House Museum, an old villa known for its tiles that sits beside the local lighthouse. Over the road to the north lie the two vastly different museums: the Casa das Histórias Paula Rego and Museu do Mar Rei Dom Carlos.
