Maly Rynek (Small Market Square)
Mały Rynek 1, Krakow, Poland, 31-041
The Maly Rynek (which translates from Polish as “small market square”) is the lesser-known baby sibling of Krakow’s Rynek Glowny (Main Market Square). Tucked behind St. Mary’s Basilica, it’s a place to escape the crowds, stop for a coffee, and enjoy views of colorful townhouses. It also hosts festivals throughout the year.
The basics
The square’s central location makes it a popular stop on private and shared walking tours of Krakow’s Old Town, which tell the story of the city’s history while showcasing key landmarks, such as the Cloth Hall, Wawel Castle, St. Mary’s Basilica, and the Barbican. It’s possible to go on self-guided tours and games to discover the city independently, or to save tired legs by traveling around the city in an electric golf cart.
Things to know before you go
The Maly Rynek is paved and mostly flat so can be accessed by strollers and wheelchair users.
There are benches on the side of the square and cafés, bars, and restaurants if you want to take a break from sightseeing.
One of the most notable buildings on the square is the beautiful Gothic structure of St. Barbara’s Church.
How to get there
Located just a block away from the Main Market Square in Krakow’s Old Town, it’s easiest to get to Maly Rynek on foot. If traveling from Krakow’s Main Train Station, you can get to Maly Rynek by walking for 20 minutes. Alternatively, you can get the #3 tram from Dworzec Główny Zachód to Poczta Glowna, and then walk 5 minutes to the square.
When to get there
As it’s a public square, Maly Rynek is accessible 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. It’s good to visit at any time of the day, but it’s particularly recommended to escape the afternoon crowds in the Main Market Square, when you fancy a break from sightseeing. There’s plenty of places to relax, eat, drink and people-watch—including bars, cafés, and a steak and wine restaurant.
Visiting St. Barbara Church on Maly Rynek
Don’t miss St. Barbara’s Church when paying a visit to Maly Rynek. This Gothic Roman Catholic church dates back to 1338, and has beautiful Baroque interiors, frescoes, and 15th-century sculptures. Still an active church, it’s open throughout the week and it’s possible to attend Mass, however services are typically in Polish.
