Madonna of the Trail
323 Marble Ave NW, Albuquerque, NM, 87102
A public sculpture in Albuquerque, Madonna of the Trail is one of 12 identical statues erected in the 1920s. Representing the contributions of pioneer women, these sculptures were commissioned by the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution, and are located in significant places along the Old Trails Road.
The basics
Visitors often encounter this statue by sculptor August Leimbach, made of pink-hued algonite stone, during a stroll through central Albuquerque or as part of a guided tour. A monument on the National Register of Historic Places, the patriotic statue depicts a determined-looking woman, holding an infant and with a child clutched to her skirt, which was created to embody the spirit of frontier women.
