Madeira Story Centre

Rua Dom Carlos I 27, Funchal, Madeira, 9060-051

Begin your Madeira excursions at the Madeira Story Centre, a modern multimedia museum that tells the archipelago’s story, from its volcanic origins 14,000 years ago to the present day. Open since 2005, the museum’s family-friendly exhibitions are complemented by a large gift shop, a terrace restaurant, and a rooftop viewing deck.

The basics

A popular attraction suited to kids and adults alike, the Madeira Story Centre aims to present the archipelago’s history in an accessible and interactive format that stimulates all five senses. Divided into eight sections—The Volcanic Origins, Legends of Discovery, Discovery of Madeira, Turmoil and Trade, Strategic Island, Madeira Development, After Navigation, and Exploring Madeira—the museum’s exhibition areas feature multimedia displays, costumed mannequins, rare artifacts, digital installations, and even thematic gardens, which introduce visitors to some of the archipelago’s native plant species.

The Madeira Story Centre is located in Funchal’s Old Town (Zona Velha) and is easily explored independently. With its friendly exhibitions and accessible size, the landmark can be paired with other nearby highlights as part of a cultural day out in the city.

Things to know before you go

  • The museum’s rooftop offers panoramic views over the city.
  • Museum visitors receive a 10% discount at the Madeira Story Centre’s on-site terrace restaurant, which specializes in traditional dishes.
  • The museum’s expansive gift shop sells an array of handmade crafts and other artisan goods in addition to typical souvenirs.

How to get there

The Madeira Story Centre is located at Rua D. Carlos I Nº27-29, in the heart of Funchal’s Old Town (Zona Velha). The museum can be reached by taxi, by bike, on foot, or by numerous local bus lines. It’s also situated just adjacent to the Funchal Cable Car station, which connects the city with lofty Monte parish.

When to get there

The museum is open daily except December 25, from 9am–7pm. The Madeira Story Centre Restaurant is open daily from 9am–midnight. The museum recommends visitors set aside between 1–2 hours to fully discover its collection and other offerings.

Neighborhood highlights

Thanks to its location in central Funchal, the Madeira Story Centre is adjacent to many of the city’s other key attractions. Pair your visit with a trip to the Museu de Electricidade Casa da Luz (Funchal’s quirky electricity museum), the Museu do Brinquedo (a toy museum), the Forte de São Tiago (a 17th-century fort), the Mercado dos Lavradores (a historical covered market), and other cultural highlights.
