Living Coast Discovery Center
1000 Gunpowder Point Drive, Chula Vista, San Diego, CA, 91910
Connecting San Diego's community with the native wildlife of Southern California, this nonprofit nature center in Chula Vista aims to inspire coastal conservation. While smaller than other zoos and aquariums, Living Coast Discovery Center is loved for its close animal encounters, dedicated staff, and scenic setting on the San Diego Bay.
The basics
More than 20 exhibits house wildlife from San Diego's aquatic and land habitats, from the deep bay creatures at the Shark and Ray Experience to birds of prey at Eagle Mesa and green sea turtles at Turtle Lagoon. Many animals were rescued from the wild and cannot be released due to injuries or other problems.
Feeding presentations happen throughout the day, or visitors can assist zookeepers with feedings and other supervised interactions by booking an animal encounter. On some weekends, wildlife educators lead nature hikes and bird-watching tours through the Sweetwater Marsh National Wildlife Refuge that surrounds the Discovery Center.
Things to know before you go
- Advance reservations for animal encounters are recommended and can be made online.
- Wildlife camps for school-aged kids are offered during winter and summer breaks.Â
- Birthday party packages are available with themes like birds of prey, sharks, and sea turtles.

San Diego Zoos and Aquariums
With its unique geography encompassing coast, bay, and desert landscapes, San Diego is home to a wealth of diverse wildlife. It's a natural destination for zoos and aquariums, most famously the renowned San Diego Zoo and Safari Park—often ranked as the best zoo in the world. The Birch Aquarium at the Scripps Institute of Oceanography in La Jolla offers a view of marine life from above and below the water surface, while the famous SeaWorld San Diego remains a family favorite.Â
