POINT OF INTEREST

Lapa

Lapa, Lisbon, Portugal, 1200-796

In Lisbon’s affluent Lapa district, international embassies stand beside grand homes, including the official residence of the Portuguese prime minister. With a handful of historical mansions, 15th-century São Bento Palace, and the famous Basílica da Estrela church, this quiet neighborhood provides a welcome break from central Lisbon.

The Basics

Travelers can explore Lapa as part of a hop-on hop-off sightseeing tour, which combines the convenience of a guided tour with the freedom and flexibility of independent travel. There are a few museums in the area, including the Amalia Rodrigues Museum House, where the Queen of Fado lived for 50 years, and the National Museum of Antique Art, housed in a 17th-century palace. The English-style Estrela Garden (Jardim de Estrela) is a wonderful place to wander.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • Lapa is a must for first-time visitors.

  • Wear comfortable shoes if you plan to explore Lapa on foot.

  • If you plan to enter the famous Basílica da Estrela church, wear clothing that covers your shoulders and knees.

How to Get There

The Lapa district is bound by Rua do Possolo and Rua Patrocínio to the west, Rua de Santo Amaro and the Estrela Garden to the north, Rua de São Bento to the east, and Rua do Quelhas and Rua Sacramento à Lapa to the south. To get there, take tram 25 or 28.

When to Get There

Lisbon enjoys relatively temperate weather throughout the year, even during the winter months, when biting winds are offset by clear and sunny skies. To avoid the crowds, head to the city outside of peak summer season, in June or September.

Culinary Hot Spots in Lapa

Lapa is renowned for its food scene, which showcases the best of Portuguese, Spanish, and Italian dishes. Travelers can feast on Mediterranean delicacies and freshly caught seafood, or indulge in the Portuguese traditional ofpastel de nata (custard tart) and an espresso in a café.
