Land's End
Cabo San Lucas, Baja California Sur, 23410
Located at the southern end of Cabo San Lucas, Land’s End features dramatic rock formations jutting out into the sea, hidden beaches, and a rich variety of sea life. Here you can seek out the remote stretch of sand known as Lover’s Beach, admire sunbathing sea lions, and see the picturesque Arch of Cabo San Lucas (El Arco).
The Basics
Most tours of Land’s End leave from Cabo San Lucas and all include a boat cruise, as the area is only reachable from the water. Options range from basic sightseeing excursions in a glass-bottom boat to romantic sunset cruises, and sometimes include tequila tasting and dinner. You can also opt for a swimming and snorkeling tour of nearby Cabo San Lucas Marine Park, or soar above the water on a parasailing excursion. Some full-day tours visit Land’s End along with other Los Cabos attractions, such as glass-blowing shops and boutiques.
Things to Know Before You Go
Land’s End is a must-see for nature and wildlife lovers.
The water near El Arco is too dangerous for swimming, as the surf can be very rough.
There are very few vendors or facilities in the area, so pack your lunch and remember to bring essentials such as water and sunscreen.
How to Get There
Land’s End is located at the southernmost tip of Mexico’s Baja Peninsula (Baja California Sur), roughly two miles (3.2 kilometers) from downtown Cabo San Lucas. You can’t reach Land’s End on foot, so the best way to get there is by guided tour or via water taxi from the downtown marina.
When to Get There
Visit Land’s End at sunset for a romantic atmosphere and picturesque views of the Pacific Ocean. You can see Land’s End year-round, although winter (December through April) is the busiest season and the best time for whale watching. Visit in May or June for comfortable springtime weather and fewer crowds.
Highlights of Land’s End
Don’t miss the famous arch El Arco, Pelican Rock, or the area’s resident sea lion colony. Lover’s Beach (Playa del Amor) and Medano Beach are also must-see attractions. Relatively untouched, the area as a whole offers a quiet escape from downtown.
Ways to explore
The Arch of Cabo San Lucas is a popular landmark on boat trips along the coastline. Tour options range from private yacht excursions to catamaran trips with snorkeling stops and glass-bottom boat tours. You’ll also often see kayakers making their way between the various rocky islets off the tip of the peninsula.
You’ll also find the Mt. Solmar hiking area, which is located on private land but can be explored on guided hikes. A gate blocks the entrance, but a guide opens it every morning at around 8am to lead the hike, accompanied by dogs from the local shelter. The hike is free, but all tips are donated to the shelter.
Accessibility
Many boat tours are wheelchair accessible; check with operators before booking to ensure they can provide adequate accommodations. The Mt. Solmar hike is not wheelchair accessible.
Age limits
None; although some tours may have age restrictions, so check ahead.
What to pack
Snacks, water, towel, reef-safe sunscreen, swimwear
What to wear
If you’re hiking, choose comfortable shoes and clothing that’s weather-appropriate. For boat tours, add swimwear and a sun-protective top if you’re planning to snorkel.
Not allowed
Some of the beaches (including Playa del Divorcio) are dangerous for swimming due to strong currents and cold waters. Always research ahead if you’re hoping to swim.
Amenities
If you’re on a boat tour, many offer restrooms, while some provide food and drinks, but packages vary. Check tour details before booking for information on what’s included.
Address
Certain parts of the peninsula are more accessible than others—several of the beaches, including Playa de Los Amantes and Playa del Divorcio, are best accessed by boat, as rising tides can cut off access. Many tours to the area offer round-trip transportation.
Driving
Most boat tours depart from Boulevard Paseo de La Marina, which is right next to the peninsula, with parking available at a large lot nearby. If you don’t have your own car, consider a tour that includes hotel pickup and drop-off.
Public transportation
From San José del Cabo, you can catch one of the Ruta del Desierto buses from the La Comer supermarket and get off at the bus stop in front of the Walmart in Cabo San Lucas. From there, it’s 1.2 miles (2 kilometers) to the trailhead for Mt. Solmar.
Best times to visit
If you’re planning to hike Mt. Solmar, the guide departs at around 8am; it can be earlier in summer, so check ahead. It’s a popular activity, so you may want to arrive 15-20 minutes beforehand. For boat tours, the arrival time will be specified.
Best days to visit
If you’d like to do the Mt Solmar hike, it takes place every day except Saturdays. Boat tours are typically busiest on weekends, so try a weekday for better availability.
Best months to visit
May tends to be quieter and boasts lovely weather. Late November offers temperate conditions that are ideal for hiking, and a lull in tourists before the winter holidays.
