Lancaster Central Market
23 N Market St., Lancaster, PA
Lancaster Central Market, a historic public market located in Penn Square in downtown Lancaster, is home to more than 65 vendors selling farm-fresh produce, meats, dairy, and ready-to-eat fare, as well as local Lancaster County crafts and collectibles. Located in the 1889 Market House, the Pennsylvania market also serves as a communal gathering spot, hosting seasonal events throughout the year.
Located near the Lancaster County Convention Center and the historic Fulton Theatre, the Lancaster Central Market attracts locals and visitors to browse, buy, and grab a bite. Here, you’ll gain a better understanding of the immigrants and refugees who've brought their culture and recipes to the town. Guided small-group food tours typically include a market stop, depending on the day and time, since the market is only open three days a week.
Dogs are not allowed inside the Market House, except certified service dogs.
The market has wheelchair-accessible entrances on the southeast corner, closest to Penn Square.
While most vendors accept credit cards, some do not. So be sure to bring cash. There is an on-site ATM.
Lancaster is roughly 72 miles (116 kilometers) west of Philadelphia. Lancaster Station is served by Amtrak's Keystone line, which links New York City to Harrisburg via Philadelphia. The city itself is best explored on foot or by car. There are several parking garages near the market, along with metered street parking. Red Rose Transit provides bus service around the county, and rideshare services are readily available.
The Lancaster Central Market is open Tuesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays from early morning through mid-afternoon. Seasonal events like the Harvest Breakfast in October and the Strawberry Festival in June are prime times to visit the market. Like at most public markets, you’ll snag the best and freshest goods in the early morning, but you can also score deals as closing time nears.
Because the market is located in the heart of Pennsylvania Dutch Country, you’ll find regional specialties unique to the state. For example, head to Shady Maple for Amish Country whoopie pies or Stoltzfus Homestyle Bakery to try a Long John—a rectangular yeast donut that’s frosted on top and often filled with cream. Grab a jar of a pungent condiment at Long’s Horseradish, while you’ll find homestyle Pennsylvania Dutch dishes like potato salad at Spring Glen Fresh Foods.
