Lake Hule (Lago de Hule)
Alajuela, Costa Rica
Costa Rica’s volcanic Lake Hule (Lago de Hule)—named for the abundant tropical rubber trees surrounding it—is located in the highlands around Poas Volcano and Congo Volcano. Visitors can stop at a restaurant overlooking the lake to enjoy sweeping views or embark on a rugged hike down to or around the lake. A 4-wheel-drive vehicle is recommended if you’re driving.
The basics
Costa Rica’s forested, mountainous landscape hides many gems, and this emerald-green crater lake is a great destination for adventurous travelers who want to stay away from the crowds. Guided hiking tours depart from La Fortuna and circumnavigate the lake, sometimes including the nearby Congo Volcano. Guided hikes are a good idea to avoid getting lost. Bird and wildlife enthusiasts will enjoy looking—and listening—out for birds, monkeys, and frogs.
Things to know before you go
Moderate fitness is required to hike to or around the lake: The path from the roadside restaurant to the lake is steep and challenging.
Stand-up paddle boarding is fun here if you have access to gear.
Bring insect repellent and watch out for snakes beside the lake, especially if you visit independently.
How to get there
Lake Hule is about a 1.5-hour drive southeast of La Fortuna. Unless you visit on a guided tour from that town, you’ll need a 4WD vehicle to travel along the rugged mountain roads. After a rain, the access road beyond the restaurant above the lake is impassable, even with a 4WD, so be prepared to hike down a challenging trail or admire the views from above.
When to get there
It’s best to visit Lake Hule in the dry season (December–April), as the access roads are rugged and are less likely to be muddy. Wet-season humidity and mist may obscure your views and make hiking uncomfortable. It’s a daytime destination, although nearby accommodation, including campsites, makes it easy to stay overnight.
Hike at Lake Arenal
If you like the idea of hiking beside a beautiful lake but Lake Hule is a little too off the beaten path for you (or you don’t have access to a 4WD), focus on Lake Arenal instead. Costa Rica’s largest lake has plenty of hiking options, including guided trips from La Fortuna and trails you can follow independently. The Arenal Volcano Peninsula Trail is an easy, short hike that takes about an hour and offers views of Lake Arenal and Arenal Volcano.
