La Pedrera (Casa Milà)
Passeig de Gràcia, 92, Barcelona, Catalonia, 08008
The rippling facade of La Pedrera (Casa Milà) is among Barcelona’s most recognizable landmarks. Created by Antoni Gaudí, the architect behind Sagrada Família and other UNESCO-listed buildings, the apartment complex is now mainly a tourist attraction, and it encompasses courtyards, an apartment filled with early 20th-century furnishings, and a rooftop terrace with chimneys resembling abstract figures. Today, it’s preserved as an interpretive center dedicated to Gaudí’s work—and offers a great first taste of Barcelona architecture.
The basics
Designed as an apartment building for some of Barcelona’s more moneyed residents, this remarkable structure is now part of the Works of Antoni Gaudí UNESCO World Heritage Site. By day, visitors can explore part of the building with the aid of an audio guide (included in the ticket price). You can also visit at night for Gaudí's Pedrera: The Origins experience, when a mesmerizing light show takes place on the roof terrace. La Pedrera is visited on many architectural tours of Barcelona, alongside other Gaudí gems such as La Sagrada Familia and Park Güell.
Things to know before you go
Book skip-the-line tickets in advance to avoid long entry lines.
For the ultimate crowd-free experience, opt for an early-access, small-group guided tour that gets you in before the doors open to the public.
The roof terrace provides little shade from Spain’s summer sun, so bring sunscreen and a hat.
The onsite Cafè de la Pedrera offers a bistro menu.
All areas of La Pedrera are wheelchair accessible, with the exception of the roof terrace, because of its uneven surfaces.
How to get there
La Pedrera is in the Eixample district on one of Barcelona’s most heavily trafficked thoroughfares: Passeig de Gracia. Take metro lines 3 or 5 to Diagonal station and walk 2 minutes from there.
When to get there
La Pedrera is open daily from morning to night. In the summer, entry lines often go around the block. The biggest crowds congregate in the middle of the day—avoid them by arriving soon after opening, or after 4pm.
Discover other Gaudí masterpieces nearby
About a 5-minute walk south of La Pedrera sits Casa Batlló. One of Gaudí's boldest designs, the building is adorned with a mosaic of colorful ceramic tiles and stained-glass shards, and known for its bone-like structures.
Ways to explore
Set aside an hour or so to visit La Pedrera—admission, which you should book in advance, includes an audio guide, plus access to a period tenant apartment, two courtyards, the rooftop, and more. There are alternatives to the standard admission, which can be a good way to experience La Pedrera when it’s less crowded. Booking options include nighttime and sunrise tours—there’s also a premium version that provides access to some spaces most visitors don’t get to see. Other bookings offer additional perks, such as hotel pickup and drop-off, or feature La Pedrera on guided tours of the city.
Accessibility
Most of La Pedrera is wheelchair accessible. There’s an elevator to the roof and a platform with views across the roof, but wheelchairs cannot be used on the rooftop itself.
Age limits
Visitors under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult.
What to pack
Camera, tickets
What to wear
The sun can be intense on the uncovered rooftop terrace, so bring a brimmed hat and sunglasses.
