For a taste of Madrid's public life, visit the area's squares—including Plaza Paja, Plaza Humiladero, and Plaza de la Cebada—all of which have cafés and restaurants. How to get there
The neighborhood is bordered by Segovia Street on the north, Puerta de Toledo on the south, and the Lavapiés district—across Toledo Street—to the east. The best way to explore La Latina is on a tour; sightseeing tours, walking tours, e-bike tours, and even tapas tours often stop here. Independent travelers can take the metro. Take the 5 line to the Puerta de Toledo or La Latina stops.
When to get there
There's really no bad time to visit La Latina. Visit in the evening to take advantage of the nightlife at La Latina's bars and taverns. Bargain hunters should stop by on Sunday, when the famous El Rastro flea market is happening, and daytime visitors can see the Basilica of San Francisco el Grande and scenic Las Vistillas Garden.
Visiting San Francisco el Grande Basilica
One of the most important landmarks in La Latina is San Francisco el Grande Basilica, one of the biggest basilicas in Spain. The church is perhaps best known for its frescoed dome—spanning more than 108 feet (33 meters)—and its rich art collection. You can find frescoes painted by Francisco Goya, and six different chapels to explore. The church is typically open Tuesday through Saturday, and sometimes on Sundays during the summer.
