POINT OF INTEREST

La Latina

Madrid, Spain, 28005

Drinks, tapas, and labyrinthine medieval streets are plentiful in La Latina, a charming neighborhood tucked into the center of Madrid. Once a blue-collar and artsy district, La Latina maintains a local culture that complements its bohemian vibes. Wander to quaint public squares, see remains of ancient city walls, and sip tinto de verano, the local tipple.

The basics

For a taste of Madrid's public life, visit the area's squares—including Plaza Paja, Plaza Humiladero, and Plaza de la Cebada—all of which have cafés and restaurants. Cebada has a busy marketplace if you want to shop with locals. For unbeatable views, visit Las Vistillas Garden (sunsets here are spectacular), and try the local taverns for a snack.

It's easy to pair a visit here with stops at nearby museums, including the Museo de San Isidro and the tiny Museum of Arts and Popular Traditions. You can also quickly walk to top attractions like Madrid Royal Palace, Plaza Mayor, and the Reina Sofia Museum.

Things to know before you go

  • Shoppers shouldn't miss the El Rastro flea market, held weekly along the Calle de la Ribera de Curtidores.
  • Taverns and tapas restaurants are ideal for a snack; try local favorites like tortilla española and thickly-sliced Manchego cheese.
  • Save time exploring La Latina with a private tour or vintage taxi excursion.

How to get there

The neighborhood is bordered by Segovia Street on the north, Puerta de Toledo on the south, and the Lavapiés district—across Toledo Street—to the east. The best way to explore La Latina is on a tour; sightseeing tours, walking tours, e-bike tours, and even tapas tours often stop here. Independent travelers can take the metro. Take the 5 line to the Puerta de Toledo or La Latina stops.

When to get there

There's really no bad time to visit La Latina. Visit in the evening to take advantage of the nightlife at La Latina's bars and taverns. Bargain hunters should stop by on Sunday, when the famous El Rastro flea market is happening, and daytime visitors can see the Basilica of San Francisco el Grande and scenic Las Vistillas Garden.

Visiting San Francisco el Grande Basilica

One of the most important landmarks in La Latina is San Francisco el Grande Basilica, one of the biggest basilicas in Spain. The church is perhaps best known for its frescoed dome—spanning more than 108 feet (33 meters)—and its rich art collection. You can find frescoes painted by Francisco Goya, and six different chapels to explore. The church is typically open Tuesday through Saturday, and sometimes on Sundays during the summer.
