Formerly known as Kunstforeningen, GL Strand is a contemporary exhibition space that showcases the best of established and upcoming Danish and international art. It’s housed in a townhouse from 1750 but has undergone plenty of redesigns to transform it into an ideal exhibition space.
The basics
GL Strand is easy to explore independently, and it’s as simple as showing up and checking out the installations on your own terms and at your own pace. Highlights include around six to eight exhibitions annually, art installations, lectures (mostly about art, though often in Danish), and film programs.

GL Strand is wheelchair-accessible, with a wheelchair-friendly entrance and elevator access at Læderstræde 15.

How to get there
GL Strand is located in central Copenhagen and is easy to reach via public transportation—M3 and M4 of the Copenhagen Metro stop at the Gl. Strand Station is nearby and busses 1A, 2A, 6A, 15, 26, and 29 all stop near GL Strand. The space has two entrances: one on Gammel Strand and a second at Læderstræde 15 via a courtyard.
When to get there
GL Strand is open Tuesday to Sunday and closed on Mondays and the week between Christmas Eve and New Year's Day. Extended hours with discounted admission on Thursday evenings are ideal for an evening visit, but you'll encounter the fewest crowds if you visit on weekday mornings. Visiting Christiansborg Palace (Christiansborg Slot)
GL Strand is located just across the river from Christiansborg Palace (Christiansborg Slot), a former regal residence that now hosts the parliamentary office, prime minister’s office, and supreme court. Due to their proximity, many people visit the two attractions on the same day. While the palace is lovely from the outside, it's worth signing up for a guided tour showing you where Danish monarchs lived in lavish luxury for centuries.
