The neighborhood known as Kuala Lumpur City Centre (KLCC is quite literally the heart of the Malaysian capital and home to some of the country’s most recognizable landmarks, including the Petronas Twin Towers. A commercial development project that began in 1993 envisioned KLCC as “a city within a city,” one that would leave visitors feeling like they could quite comfortably never leave the area.
The basics
Besides housing myriad bars, restaurants, and shops, KLCC is home to Suria KLCC, a massive six-floor shopping mall occupying the lower levels of the Petronas Twin Towers, with international retailers and a large supermarket. The neighborhood is also home to the beautiful and modern Assyakirin Mosque, set at the base of the Petronas Towers. All sorts of tours come here, from standard city tours to nighttime experiences, some tailored for travelers on layovers.
Things to know before you go
- Bring an umbrella or rain jacket, even if you’re visiting during the dryer months of May through September, just in case.
- Most of the attractions and shops in KLCC are wheelchair-friendly.
- Large bags, tripods, and selfie sticks are not allowed in the Petronas Towers, though there is a bag check.
How to get there
KLCC is served by the Kelana Jaya public transportation line through KLCC LRT station. It is also accessible via the RapidKL bus, and there is plenty of underground public parking in the area.
When to get there
KLCC is great to visit day and night, and the Suria mall here is open every day from morning until evening. Note that the Petronas Towers are closed on Mondays as well as on Hari Raya Aidilfitri (Eid al-Fitr) and Hari Raya Aidiladha (Eid al-Adha). It’s also closed briefly on Friday afternoons.
KLCC for Kids
While shopping, nightlife, and the Petronas Towers are the big draws to KLCC for many, there’s also plenty to keep younger visitors happy. KLCC Park is a great option, with its artificial lake, jogging paths, fountains and playgrounds, as is Aquaria KLCC, a huge aquarium with all sorts of marine life from around the world.
