POINT OF INTEREST

Korean Furniture Museum

121 Daesagwan-ro, Seongbuk-gu, Seoul, South Korea

Opened in 2008, the Korean Furniture Museum is one of Seoul’s best kept secrets. Housed within a series of beautifully maintained Korean traditional houses (hanoks), the museum contains a collection of more than 2,000 pieces of Joseon Dynasty furniture collected by the private museum’s owner, Chyung Mi-sook.

The Basics

Visitors can only view the collection by reserving a private tour in advance. Thanks to this exclusive policy, walking the grounds and ducking into the traditional buildings feels like stepping back in time. The tour, available in English, offers insight into the lives of families living in hanoks during the Joseon Dynasty. You’ll learn about the buildings’ design and materials, and how each room was laid out based on its purpose in the home.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • The museum is a must-visit for history buffs and those interested in traditional Korean culture.

  • Tours of the museum are by reservation only; book online in advance.

  • Tours last approximately one hour.

  • Photography is not allowed within much of the museum; on-site guides will let you know when it’s OK to take pictures.

How to Get There

Because the Korea Furniture Museum isn’t well-connected by public transportation, it’s a good idea to take a taxi from Hansung University Station on the Seoul metro Line 4.

When to Get There

Guided tours of the museum collection are offered Tuesday to Saturday, except on national holidays. Tours in English are offered four times every afternoon.

The Bachelor in Seoul

During the 2014 season of ABC-TV’s show The Bachelor, Juan Pablo Galavis and his leading ladies spent a whirlwind week of romance in Seoul. Among the many filming locations was the Korean Furniture Museum, where Juan Pablo takes a few ladies on a group date after performing with K-pop group 2NE1. Special Bachelor-themed tours stop at the museum for tea and dessert.
