Knysna Heads

Knysna, South Africa, 6571

A pair of headlands that separate the Knysna River Estuary (or Knysna Lagoon) from the Indian Ocean, the Knysna Heads are an iconic landmark along South Africa’s Garden Route. Home to residences, hotels, restaurants, a golf course, and a nature reserve, the Knysna Heads offers truly stunning views.

The basics

There are a number of ways to experience the Knysna Heads. The East Heads is the more accessible side, and features several viewpoints you can drive to, including at Coney Glen Road and Fountain Viewpoint. You’ll also find some small beaches, a golf course, hotels and restaurants on the East Head. The only way to see the West Head is to visit the Featherbed Nature Reserve, which includes a ferry ride, a 4WD trip, and hike. A number of boat cruises offer views of the Knysna Heads from the water, including lagoon cruises, sunset cruises, and oyster cruises.

Things to know before you go

  • The Knysna Heads are a must-see attraction in Knysna and a popular stop along the Garden Route.

  • There are no public roads that access the West Head: a ferry across the lagoon is the only way to visit.

  • Only take part in water activities in designated areas, and be aware of the changing tides before getting in the water.

How to get there

The Knysna Heads are south of the town of Knysna, which is located along the Garden Route, around 305 miles (490 kilometers) from Cape Town. You can reach the East Head by driving, with various stops along the head, while the West Head is only accessible by ferry. Boat cruises offer a closer view of the heads.

When to get there

The Knysna Heads can be visited at any time, though a clear day will offer the best views. The summer months from December to February boast the best weather, but are typically the busiest time to visit the Garden Route. Consider shoulder months, such as November or March, for pleasant temperatures and less crowds.

A dangerous crossing

Attempting to cross the Knysna Heads can be dangerous and has claimed a number of ships over the years, including The Emu, which was the very first ship to attempt it in 1817. Located off the East Head in fairly shallow water, the Paquita shipwreck is a destination for snorkelers and scuba divers, though there is only a short window each day when it can be safely explored and it’s best to go with a local operator who knows the waters and tides.
