King's Square (Königsplatz)

Königsplatz 1, Munich, Bavaria, 80333

King’s Square is a square in Munich that dates back to the 19th century when King Ludwig I commissioned two temple-like museums inspired by the Acropolis in Athens. Notable sites include the Propylaea, the Glyptothek, and the State Collections of Antiquities. The area also holds significance as a site for Nazi rallies during World War II.

The basics

Walking tours are ideal to learn more about the history of King’s Square—including its links to World War II. Many guided Munich walking tours focus on Hilter and the Third Reich, with stops at King’s Square, the Old Town Hall, Marienplatz, and the Staatliches Hofbräuhaus. Other travelers opt for small-group or private bike tours to see the city faster. Alternatively, a Segway tour is another fun and fast way to tick off Munich’s top sights.

Things to know before you go

  • King’s Square is accessible to wheelchair users.

  • As it’s a public square, there’s no entrance fee; however, some of the historical sights in the area do have admission fees.

  • Light portable folding chairs are available for visitors to the State Collections of Antiquities and the Glyptothek who want to take a break.

  • There is free Wi-Fi (called M-WLAN), which is available throughout Munich.

  • If you want to take a break from sightseeing, there are plenty of restaurants and cafes near King’s Square.

How to get there

It’s easy to get to King’s Square by public transport. The underground (U-Bahn) lines U2 or U8 stop off at Königsplatz station. Alternatively, you can get the #100 bus (the Museumslinie) to Königsplatz. Another option is traveling by tram—the tram lines #27 and #28 stop at Karolinenplatz, which is only a 5-minute walk away.

When to get there

Munich is busiest in the summer and during the world-renowned annual Oktoberfest festival—which usually runs from September to October. It’s best to avoid visiting between July and October to beat the crowds. Instead, opt for a trip in May or June and visit King’s Square during the week for a less congested experience.

What’s on at King’s Square

Travelers flock to King’s Square to visit its popular museums—the Propylaea, the Glyptothek, and the State Collections of Antiquities. However, this Grecian-inspired public space is also a setting for picnics, concerts, festivals, and cultural events, such as the Tunix Open Air festival (typically in July) and summer outdoor cinema sessions.
