King Tomislav Square (Trg Kralja Tomislava)
Zagreb, Croatia, 10000
One of Zagreb’s most popular public parks, King Tomislav Square (Trg Kralja Tomislava), is named after the first king of Croatia and features an enormous equestrian statue of the ruler. Flanked on one side by the Central Station (Glavni Kolodvor) and on the other by the Art Pavilion (Umjetnicki Paviljon), it offers neoclassical beauty and a scenic place to unwind.
The basics
Part of Lenuci’s Green Horseshoe—a collection of public parks and gardens arranged in a horseshoe shape in Zagreb’s Lower Town—King Tomislav Square is the perfect place to catch your breath, cozy up with a book or simply indulge in some people-watching when taking a break from a busy day of sightseeing.
Adjacent to many of the Croatian capital’s most notable attractions—including the Institute of Contemporary Art, Zagreb Puppet Theatre, and the Zagreb Botanical Garden—the public square is easy to drop by independently. But you can also discover it on several guided tours, from speedy bike and e-scooter itineraries to leisurely walking excursions and self-guided adventures.
Things to know before you go
The park is open to all, and no tickets are required to access it.
King Tomislav Square is accessible to wheelchair users.
While the park has no facilities, it is ringed by an array of bars, restaurants, and cafes catering to local and international visitors.
How to get there
King Tomislav Square is located just steps from Zagreb’s Central Station (Glavni Kolodvor), the city’s major transit hub, linking it to international cities like Budapest and Vienna. Numerous tram lines also serve the Glavni Kolodvor stop, and taxis and rideshare services offer another way to get there. The park itself is pedestrian-only.
When to get there
King Tomislav Square is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, but the best time to make the most of this pretty green space is on a good weather day. Note that the park is likely to be especially busy during summer weekends and also hosts a lively Christmas market and ice rink in the lead-up to the holidays.
Highlights of Zagreb’s Lower Town
With its wealth of gardens, public artworks, and cultural venues, Zagreb’s Lower Town is a must-visit during any trip to the Croatian capital. Once you’ve explored the parks of Lenuci’s Green Horseshoe, continue to highlights like the Archaeological Museum in Zagreb (home to a vast array of ancient artifacts, including the Zagreb Mummy) before catching a ballet or opera performance at the Croatian National Theatre.
