KiMo Theatre
The KiMo Theater has entertained residents for nearly a century, becoming one of Albuquerque’s most celebrated historic landmarks. Built in the distinctive Southwestern Pueblo Deco style, which fuses Native American–inspired decorations with art deco influences—complete with colorful murals, chandeliers, and buffalo skulls with glowing red eyes—it’s both an architectural gem and a popular destination for concerts, screenings, and other events.
In its first decades of existence, Albuquerque’s KiMo Theatre was the city’s premier movie-going venue; since it was saved from decline and demolition in the 1970s, it’s been reborn as a home for theatrical performances, dance, and live music. Events are held regularly: it’s worth researching its calendar and purchasing tickets online in advance of your visit.
It’s possible to visit the theater independently as part of a sightseeing day out in Albuquerque. If you’re interested in architecture and design, look out for the venue’s free Meet The Kimo tours, listed within its ticketing website. You can also drop in during the venue’s Wednesday–Sunday daytime hours to admire the theater’s one-of-a-kind interior. Keep an eye out for any unexplained happenings as you go—the KiMo is supposedly haunted.
- Owing to its historic architecture, only parts of the theater, including its ground-floor level, are accessible to wheelchair users. There are wheelchair and companion seats within the auditorium for performances.
- To purchase tickets to performances in advance, head to the venue’s website.
- Drinks and snacks are available in the concessions area.
- The KiMo Theatre is located in Downtown Albuquerque at 423 Central NW, Albuquerque. It’s a quick trip from the Downtown Albuquerque Rail Runner station, and can be reached via bus lines, including 66, 766, and 777. No parking is available on-site, but there are nearby lots and garages, including a covered parking garage behind the theater at Copper Ave. and 5th St. There is metered parking along Central Ave.
The KiMo Theatre has variable opening hours depending on its events schedule. Its on-site box office opens two hours prior to event start times. Visitors can also drop by during its daytime office hours from Wednesday–Sunday.
After visiting the KiMo Theatre, it’s worth discovering Albuquerque’s other highlight landmarks. Head to the San Felipe de Neri Church, an 18th-century building that is one of the city’s oldest); admire Native American artifacts at the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center or Albuquerque Museum; and discover ancient petroglyphs at the Petroglyph National Monument.
