Kalwaria Zebrzydowska is a town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and an important Calvary pilgrimage site in Southern Poland. It's backed beautifully by the Carpathian mountains and is home to more than 40 small churches and chapels. The site is also famous for its annual passion plays that depict Jesus’ crucifixion and resurrection.

Known for being a favorite place of the late Pope John Paul II—because of its proximity to his hometown in Wadowice—many travelers come here as part of a private or shared guided tour that focuses on the life and sites significant to Pope John Paul II. Tours typically begin in Krakow and visit the former Family Home of John Paul II, as well as the Sanctuary of Divine Mercy and the Sanctuary of Kalwaria Zebrzydowska.

If you’re planning a walk, some of the trails take 2-3 hours, so they’re not recommended for those with limited mobility.
Be sure to wear comfortable shoes so you can explore the pilgrimage routes with ease.
The solemn nature of the site and the depictions of Jesus’ crucifixion mean it might not be suitable for young children.
There’s an on-site restaurant, bookstore, and souvenir kiosk that are open year-round.
Don’t miss the nearby town of Wadowice, which was the birthplace of the late Pope John Paul II.
How to get there
A popular day trip option from Krakow, many travelers choose to come here by public transport, as the route showcases beautiful countryside views. You can catch a train from Krakow’s Main Railway Station to Wadowice, which takes around 70 minutes. From Wadowice, you can get a bus to Kalwaria Zebrzydowska, which only takes around 30 minutes.

The outdoor appeal of Kalwaria Zebrzydowska makes it a great location to visit in the spring and summer months (ideally April through August), so you can explore its trails, and dispersed churches and chapels. If you’re interested in watching religious processions and the passion play, then Easter is a good time to visit.

Passion plays, like those held in Kalwaria Zebrzydowska, are annual reenactments of the Passion of Jesus Christ, portraying events leading up to his crucifixion and resurrection. These performances occur during Holy Week, leading up to Easter Sunday. Actors take to the streets, vividly acting out biblical stories, providing a moving and immersive experience for spectators.
