Houtong Cat Village
Ruifang District, New Taipei City, Taipei, 224
One of Taiwan’s most unusual attractions, the Houtong Cat Village, located in the island’s northeast, is famously home to many stray cats. There are now more felines than humans in this former mining village, making it a popular (and adorable) day-trip destination for visitors from nearby Taipei and Keelung City.
The basics
In the 1990s, when the area’s mines closed and many residents departed, what is now the Houtong Cat Village was gradually colonized by a population of feral cats. Today, this hilly town along the Keelung River is best known for its feline population, and cats of all descriptions can be found all over town, attracting adoring visitors. Local volunteers ensure that the cats are in good health, and many teahouses, shops, and cafés cater to visitors.
It’s easy to plan an independent day trip to the Houtong Cat Village from Taipei. A range of organized day trips visit the village and other landmarks along Taiwan’s northern coast, including the Yehliu Geopark and Shifen Old Streets.
Things to know before you go
- While cat treats are sold in Houtong’s shop, feeding is generally discouraged to protect the cats’ health. If you do feed them, do so only in minimal amounts.
- Be gentle and respectful of the resident cats. While many are used to humans, not all want contact—approach slowly and engage only if the cat comes to you.
- Shops selling cat-themed gifts and souvenirs are located all over town if you wish to leave with a special item or two.
- Wash your hands after engaging with the cats.
- Flash photography is prohibited.
How to get there
Houtong Cat Village is roughly 24 miles (38 kilometers) east of Taipei. The easiest way to explore is by taking a direct train from the Taipei Main Station to Houtong Station; the journey is approximately 1 hour. Group tours or taxi trips are another way to visit; journey times typically take less than 1 hour.
When to get there
Houtong Cat Village is a popular destination throughout the year, and you’re sure to meet many adorable cats during your visit. As much of the village’s highlights are outdoors, you should time your trip for regular daytime hours (many Houtong businesses shut in the early evening) and avoid visiting on a rainy day. To beat the crowds, aim for a weekday visit.
