Hon Ga Choi Island (Fighting Cocks Island)
Ha Long, Quang Ninh
Hon Ga Choi Island is usually translated into English as Fighting Cocks Island or Cock and Hen Island, as the two adjacent rock formations that comprise the island resemble these birds from some angles, and in a certain light. Located in Northern Vietnam’s picturesque Halong Bay, the jagged rocks are a popular landmark and photo subject.
The basics
Halong Bay contains around 2,000 small islands. Hon Ga Choi Island is actually two of these, jagged 39-foot (12-meter) limestone rocks rising from the water. Many cruises in Halong Bay pass them, as they’re one of the most famous landmarks in the bay. Many travelers visit Halong Bay on a cruise, either from Hanoi or while based in smaller nearby towns. Some of these include kayaking, which is a good way to get a closer view of Hon Ga Choi Island.
Things to know before you go
- You may not immediately think these rocks look much like chickens, but use some imagination and it may come!
- It’s not possible to walk on these islands, as they’re simply rocky outcrops.
- Many islands in Halong Bay are named after the shapes they’re thought to represent. Ask your guide for the names of the others, to see whether you agree.
How to get there
Hon Ga Choi Island is located roughly halfway between Bai Chay on the mainland and the larger Cat Ba Island in the bay. A cruise or other boat ride on Halong Bay is the only way to reach Hon Ga Choi Island. These can be arranged from Hanoi, about 2.5 hours west, or other parts of Northern Vietnam.
When to get there
Halong Bay cruises can be taken at any time of year, and each season provides different scenes and experiences. Sunset is an especially popular time for boats to converge on Hon Ga Choi Island, as travelers like to take photos.
Caves of Halong Bay
Halong Bay is a complex network of islands, inlets, rocky outcrops, and underground caves Many tours stop at at least one cave complex, huge caverns with easily navigable pathways, and colorful lights illuminating the most interesting features. Thien Cung, Sung Sot, and Dau Go are some popular caves that tours stop at.
