Henry C. Chambers Waterfront Park
Henry C. Chambers Waterfront Park is a relatively new addition to this centuries-old city. Opened in 1979, it was named after a Beaufort mayor and has become a central gathering space, playing host to community festivals and private events throughout the year. On any given day, expect to see locals and visitors relaxing in the park, watching the boats cruise the riverfront.
The basics
It’s nearly impossible to visit Beaufort and not spend time at Henry C. Chambers Waterfront Park. This riverside green space is flanked by dozens of restaurants and shops, making it a perfect place to enjoy a coffee on a dog walk, wait for your table reservation, or take vacation photos. Its family-friendly atmosphere invites visitors to stay, play, or join in with Beaufort’s residents during its many annual events.
Things to know before you go
- The playground is fenced and gated.
- Fishing is permitted off of the riverfront.
- Private events may restrict visitor access in some areas.
How to get there
Henry C. Chambers Waterfront Park is located at the edge of town, just off of Bay Street. You can access it via Bay Street and Carteret Street. Limited metered street parking is available on Bay Street, and there’s also a parking lot near the playground and west of the park by Safe Harbor Beaufort.
When to get there
The park is open around the clock, and the best time to visit is without a doubt during one of the annual events it hosts. Live entertainment on the stage makes it a popular place on the weekends, while families headed to the playground will appreciate fewer crowds on weekdays.
See the view from the other side of the river
Across the Beaufort Memorial Bridge, you’ll find Whitehall Park. This green space with a covered pavilion is not as centrally located as Henry C. Chambers Waterfront Park, but its serene Lowcountry natural setting makes it a great place for photos, picnics, and viewing firework shows over Beaufort.
