Helsinki City Hall (Kaupungintalo)
Pohjoisesplanadi 11-13, Helsinki, Finland, 00170
Helsinki City Hall (Kaupungintalo) was designed as a hotel by German architect Carl Ludvig Engel in 1833. Today, modern glass structures have replaced many of the classical interiors, but the imperial blue-and-white facade remains, making the building a highlight of city tours. The city hall is a working administrative center, but occasionally hosts various events and exhibitions.
The basics
Architecture buffs can bring a camera and snap pictures around the city hall grounds independently, or on walking and sightseeing tours that cover central Helsinki's highlights in half a day. These tours tend to visit Helsinki's other houses of political power, such as the President's Palace and the Parliament of Finland. The lobby of the Kaupungintalo is a co-working space hosting events and art exhibits throughout the year and is open to the public.
Things to know before you go
The city hall has an onsite cafeteria-style dining space.
There are restrooms available to the public.
Other amenities include public water stations, computers for use, and free Wi-Fi.
How to get there
The Helsinki City Hall is in the Kruununhaka district, overlooking Market Square, on Pohjoisesplanadi Street. It's in a convenient location steps from the South Harbor and the Esplanadi public park. In this central part of Helsinki, walking and biking is the best way to get around, but public transit is another option—the nearest tram stop is Kauppatori.
When to get there
The Helsinki City Hall public lobby space, called the City Hall Event Square, is open Monday to Friday from morning to mid-afternoon, and stays open until early evening during scheduled events. Consider visiting the city hall in conjunction with Market Square across the street, which sells Finnish food, handicrafts, and souvenirs from spring to fall—and hosts the traditional Helsinki Baltic Herring Market in October.
When to visit the Helsinki Baltic Herring Market
If you're visiting Helsinki during the first week of October, you're in for a treat—the Helsinki Baltic Herring Market. This beloved local market has been posted up across the street from Helsinki City Hall since 1743 and is among the longest-running markets of its kind in Finland. The market week celebrates Finnish fishing traditions and Baltic herring: fishers hawk the daily catches and prepare herring in traditional Finnish styles, competing for cooking awards.
