POINT OF INTEREST

Haus Schwarzenberg

Rosenthaler Str. 39, Berlin

One of the best places to see art in Berlin isn’t quite a museum or gallery at all, but rather an unpretentious public space called Haus Schwarzenberg. Visit this artistic enclave to check out courtyard sculptures, art studios and galleries, an art-house cinema, and an underground amusement park, among other outlandish creations. If you dream of Berlin’s edgy art spaces, this is what you’re looking for.

Enter the public gateway next to Hackesche Höfe in Mitte, Berlin’s central borough, and you’ll encounter three connecting courtyards comprising the heart of Haus Schwarzenberg. The building around them, which remains much as it looked during the postwar era, houses art galleries, museums, and quirky installations.

After checking out the courtyards and museum and gallery spaces, head underground to see Monsterkabinett, a labyrinth of robot monsters and soundscapes. While visiting this unique public space on your own can be full of surprises, you can also try street-art walking tours to get a little more historical and artistic context.

  • Ideal for travelers interested in postwar Berlin, Jewish history, and Berlin’s alternative art scene.
  • Find a small beer garden and performance space in the third courtyard.
  • Haus Schwarzenberg also houses commercial spaces—look for cafés and shops around the courtyards.
  • Consider making a donation in the box near the entrance to the second courtyard.

Haus Schwarzenberg is near Hackescher Markt in the Mitte district of Berlin, easily accessible by public transportation, including S-Bahn and U-Bahn trains. The nearest train stations are (U) Weinmeisterstr and (S) Hackescher Markt. The address is Rosenthaler Str. 39.

Haus Schwarzenberg is open year-round, with a lively atmosphere on the weekends and during cultural events. The space is technically open 24 hours a day, but some of the museums and galleries, such as the Neurotitan Gallery (open Monday to Saturday), keep regular hours. The cinema moves outside in the summer.

It isn’t exactly easy to sort out what kind of art you can expect to see at Haus Schwarzenberg, but it can be helpful to know what kinds of museums and galleries there are. In addition to eclectic art spaces, you can expect to find Neurotitan, a contemporary art gallery, and the Museum Blindenwerkstatt Otto Weidt, a history museum dedicated to a shop owner who protected Jews during the Third Reich.
