Grumari Beach (Praia de Grumari)

Not very well known by tourists, Grumari Beach offers an escape from the often busy beaches of Copacabana and Ipanema in Rio de Janeiro. This stretch of nearly two miles (three km of white and red sand is on a nature reserve, and its consistent waves attract surfers from nearby Prainha.

On Grumari Beach, visitors enjoy peace and tranquility surrounded by rolling hills and deep green Atlantic rainforest. Travelers looking to enjoy some of the region’s more tranquil beaches without needing to rent a car can book a secret beaches tour for a day of sun and sand at Grumari, Prainha, and Pontal Beaches. A visit to the beach can also be combined with a hike to Pedra do Telégrafo, a rocky outcrop with spectacular views of the city to one side and Tijuca National Park to the other.

The beach is about 30 minutes west of Rio’s city center. No public transportation reaches Grumari Beach, so you have to drive, hire a taxi, or visit as part of a guided tour from Rio.
When to get there
While a bit off the beaten path, Grumari Beach can still get busy with locals on the weekends. Plan your visit for a weekday afternoon, when you have the beach largely to yourself.
Village of Guaratiba
Guaratiba is the nearest village to Grumari Beach, and it’s primarily a community of fishermen. It’s an excellent place to stop for a seafood lunch or dinner on your way to or from the beach.
