Gric Tunnel (Tunel Gric)
Mesnička ul. 19, Zagreb, Croatia, 10000
Running beneath Zagreb’s Upper Town, Gric Tunnel (Tunel Gric) is a curious reminder of the city’s World War II history. This former air raid shelter connects Mesnička Street and Radićeva Street, with several other offshoots and exits along the way. The tunnel is usually ittle more than a route for getting across town, but occasionally it’s used as a temporary exhibition space.
The basics
Add Gric Tunnel to your Upper Town sightseeing itinerary and combine it with one of the many nearby attractions, such as Lotrščak Tower, the Funicular Railway, the Croatian Museum of Naive Art, and Saint Mark’s Church. Walking tours, including WWII–themed tours, regularly pass through the tunnel and offer insight into how it’s been used over the years. Unless a special exhibition is taking place, you won’t need too long to walk the 1,148 feet (350 meters) stretch along the main passage.
Things to know before you go
Entry is free.
The tunnel is for pedestrians only.
The tunnel is typically cool, so can offer a respite from the heat on hot summer days.
Entrances are occasionally closed if an event is taking place.
The Mesnička entrance is wheelchair accessible, but others are not.
How to get there
There are entrances to Gric Tunnel on Mesnička Street and Radićeva Street, plus more entry points within the Art Park and on Ilica. Take the funicular from the Lower to Upper Town, then follow the Strossmayer Promenade in either direction to reach the streets. Otherwise, take a tram to Ban Jelačić Square and head up Pavla Radića Street.
When to get there
Open daily year-round, from morning until evening, you can walk through Gric Tunnel whenever suits you. Go in winter and you may get to see the tunnel sporting festive decorations, adding a bit of fun and color to this dark, concrete passage.
20th century history of Zagreb
Many Zagreb attractions offer a glimpse into its medieval history, but few explore the city’s experiences during WWII and the collapse of Yugoslavia. The Zagreb City Museum—also in the Upper Town—features a few exhibits on the 20th century, but the best way to learn about this eventful period is by joining a historical walking tour.
