POINT OF INTEREST

Green Lake

Whistler, British Colombia

Just north of Whistler Village, Green Lake—named for its vibrant emerald hue—is a popular recreation area for activities such as canoeing, kayaking, and paddleboarding. The glacier-fed lake, surrounded by mountains, makes for a great picnic spot too. It’s also a landing zone for seaplanes, which connect Whistler to Vancouver and Victoria.

The Basics

From the public docks, you can rent watercraft, canoes, kayaks, and paddleboards to explore Green Lake, the largest lake in the Whistler area. For an airborne adventure, floatplane tours take off from Green Lake and fly over the surrounding Coast Range, glaciers, and lush valleys, as well as to harbors farther afield such as Vancouver or Victoria. You can also explore Whistler Valley by bike via the trail tracing the lake’s western shore. To simply relax and enjoy the views, opt for a picnic or visit Table Nineteen at the Nicklaus North Golf Course, with its patio overlooking the lake.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • Green Lake is a popular destination for photography enthusiasts, outdoor-oriented travelers, and families.

  • The lake is best visited in summer, when the water isn’t covered in ice and snow.

  • Green Lake is a popular destination on weekends, so visit during the week to avoid crowds.

  • Dress for your activity and in layers, as it can be breezy and cool on the water, even in summer.

How to Get There

Green Lake is located along the Sea to Sky Highway, just north of Whistler Village between the Alpine Meadows and Emerald Estates residential areas. It’s easily accessible by car or local bus lines 1 and 3.

When to Get There

Green Lake is best visited from late spring through early fall, when the climate is comfortable and the snow has melted. In winter, the icy lake is often inhospitable if not inaccessible.

Green Lake Boat Rentals

Many visitors to Green Lake opt to rent kayaks, canoes, or paddleboards to get out on the water and take in more of the views. Rentals are available at the boat launch. You can take a trip around the lake or paddle to Alta Lake, which connects to Green Lake via the River of Golden Dreams.

Is British Columbia’s Green Lake really green?

Yes, the lake is shallow and pebbly, with clear water and a lot of algae. That and a special chemical composition gives the water its emerald-green appearance. It also has something known as a low flushing rate, meaning it takes a long time for the lake’s water to be refilled.

When is the best time of year for visiting Green Lake?

The best time for visiting Green Lake is during the summer months from June to August, with July being the hottest month. That’s when the water gets warm enough for swimming and you’re unlikely to encounter much rainfall. In winter, Green Lake is often frozen over with ice and snow.

Is it possible to camp at Green Lake Park?

Yes, in fact, it’s one of the most popular activities near the lake. Green Lake Park features 11 campsites, including three that are vehicle-accessible. If it’s a forest setting you’re after, try Emerald Bay or Sunset View. Arrowhead offers camping spaces along the waterfront. Campers can reserve spaces in advance online.

What wildlife calls Green Lake home?

The lakeside region, located in the southern part of the Cariboo Plateau, is home to a sizable resident population of moose and deer. You might even encounter the odd black bear, but don’t worry, they rarely bother humans. The western end of the lake is a great spot for waterfowl sightings.

Can I bring my pet to Green Lake in British Columbia?

Yes, but you must keep dogs on a leash, and they aren’t allowed on any of the beaches or inside any of the park buildings. Plus, dog owners should never be tempted to bring their pets along for a hike through the backcountry because of the risk of bear sightings.

What activities are available at Green Lake?

Camping is a main draw for visitors to Green Lake. Other activities at Green Lake include a short hike, swimming at both sand and pebble beaches, and some cattle trails that can be used by cyclists. Canoeing and horseback riding aren’t allowed there, and visitors need a license to fish.
