POINT OF INTEREST

Grandview Point

Grand Canyon Village, AZ

Grandview Point’s scenic overlook offers views of the Grand Canyon from the tallest and southernmost point on the South Rim. It’s location a mile off the main road between Grand Canyon Village and Desert View Visitor Center means fewer crowds a new vantage point overlooking the canyon’s majestic layers. The nearby trail provides views of the Colorado River far below.

Grandview Point is an ideal spot for photos or a picnic on the scenic drive along the South Rim. If you have more time you can spend the day hiking on Grandview Trail or take a Jeep tour of the South Rim. The guided Jeep tour offers insights into the history and geology of the region and transport to and from Tusayan, Arizona.

  • Don’t miss Grandview Point on a drive along the South Rim.
  • The best views are found on a short walk down Grandview Trail because trees obstruct the view from the overlook itself.
  • A paved pathway makes the vista wheelchair accessible.
  • There is no water at the site.

Grandview Point is accessible via a one-mile side road that stems from Desert View Drive about 12 miles (20 kilometers) from both Grand Canyon Village and the Desert View East Entrance parking area. The Grand Canyon shuttle does not include the point so the best way to reach the overlook is by private car or on a tour.

Spring and fall are the best seasons to visit Grandview Point. Its 7,400-foot (2,255 meter) elevation means it gets more snow and ice than the rest of the South Rim. In contrast, summertime on the South Rim is generally hot and crowded. The overlook’s expansive views to both the east and west make it an ideal place to catch both sunrise and sunset over the Grand Canyon.

Grandview Point is the trailhead for a steep and challenging trek into the depths of the Grand Canyon. The narrow switchbacks of Grandview Trail can be admired by all from the overlook but the descent into the canyon should be reserved for experienced desert hikers. While views of the Colorado River are one of the treasures of this trail, note that you can not reach the water from this day hike due to sheer cliffs.
