Goat Island (Isla de Cabras)
Toa Baja, Palo Seco, PR, 00949
West of Old San Juan, this small islet was once used as a leprosy colony, and remains of the lodgings where people with leprosy were forced to live still stand on the island. Today, the island is used as a police training area and for recreation, and it offers great views out over Old San Juan.
The basics
Another key attraction on the island is the Fortín San Juan de la Cruz (El Cañuelo), which was built from 1608 to 1610 to protect the mouth of the Bayamón River and to support operations at Castillo San Felipe del Moro, directly across the bay. Today, the fort is a great place to wander and take in views of Old San Juan, and while it’s not a top spot on San Juan tours, you can request a private guide to take you there.
Things to know before you go
Wear comfortable shoes and sun protection and drink plenty of water.
Wheelchair users might find parts of the island inaccessible.
Entry is free, but there is a fee to park on the island.
How to get there
Goat Island is located across the San Juan Bay from Old San Juan. The best way to get there is by car, taxi, or on part of a guided tour, since relying on public transportation would require hours of travel and multiple changes for what would otherwise be a 30- to 40-minute drive. Ferry rides aren't required, as Goat Island is corrected to the main island of Puerto Rico by road.
When to get there
The best time to visit Goat Island is during the morning, before it gets hot. Weekdays usually see fewer crowds. Note that the rainy season runs from June until November, with storm activity peaking in September, so you should monitor the weather carefully if you come this time of year.
San Juan National Historic Site (Sitio Histórico Nacional de San Juan)
Parts of Goat Island, and a large section of Old San Juan across the waters, are protected as part of the San Juan National Historic Site, a must-see for history fans coming to the Caribbean. Highlights include the Castillo San Felipe del Morro, where you can see old-fashioned cannons and a restored lighthouse, and Castillo San Cristóbal, the largest fortified site in Puerto Rico.
