Glenkinchie Distillery
Pencaitland, Tranent, United Kingdom, EH34 5ET
One of just a few distilleries in Scotland’s Lowlands region, Glenkinchie Distillery has a scenic farmland setting, just 15 miles (24 kilometers) from Edinburgh. Its whisky is famously used in Johnnie Walker blends (in addition to being sold as single malts), and its distillery also serves as a regional base for the Johnnie Walker brand.
The basics
Glenkinchie Distillery was founded by brothers John and George Rate in 1837. After falling into disrepair, the facility was revived in 1881 and now occupies a handsome Victorian building whose style offsets its enormous copper stills (including its wash still, the largest in Scotland). Its proximity to the Scottish capital has earned its whisky the nickname of “Edinburgh Malt,” celebrated for its delicate profile, featuring light hay and floral notes. Easy to visit from Edinburgh, Glenkinchie is included on numerous whisky tours and day trips from the Scottish capital.
Things to know before you go
Glenkinchie Distillery is suitable for visitors with limited mobility and is wheelchair accessible.
A variety of guided tasting packages are offered; if visiting as a solo traveler, it’s recommended to book in advance.
Glenkinchie also operates a bar, where it’s possible to order hot drinks, cocktails, drams, and tasting platters.
How to get there
Glenkinchie Distillery is in Pencaitland, Scotland, 15 miles (24 kilometers) east of Edinburgh in the East Lothian region. If traveling from the capital, it’s a roughly 40-minute drive via the A1 and A68. The closest train station is Longniddry, served by ScotRail services, which is a 20-minute taxi ride away; the area is also served by numerous bus lines.
When to get there
The distillery is open daily, from late morning until early evening. (During the November to April off-season, it has slightly reduced visiting hours.) Note that during the winter, adverse weather conditions can lead to last-minute closures; it’s advised to confirm opening hours before traveling.
Lowland distilleries
Compared to Scotland’s Speyside region, which is home to 50 distilleries, the Lowlands are home to just a handful. But that’s good news for whisky lovers with a completist streak looking to explore the best of the region. Beyond Glenckinchie, other Lowland distilleries worth discovering include Auchentoshan, Kingsbarns, Eden Mill, and Annandale.
