POINT OF INTEREST

Gladstone’s Land

477B Lawnmarket, Edinburgh, Scotland, EH1 2NT

Located in the heart of Edinburgh's Royal Mile, Gladstone's Land is a historic 17th-century tenement building. Furnished rooms and dynamic displays give visitors a glimpse into the daily life of its former residents. Gladstone's Land is a must-visit for history enthusiasts and those seeking an immersive sightseeing experience.

The basics

Gladstone's Land can be explored independently, allowing you to experience the charm and authenticity of a 17th-century tenement house at your own pace. The historic site also offers daily tours (at an additional cost) every afternoon, which provide insights into the lives of the former residents. Travelers short on time may consider an Edinburgh self-guided audio tour or a group walking tour, which stops outside Gladstone’s Land and includes a brief history of the building.

Things to know before you go

  • A group guided tour is offered twice every afternoon and can be booked in advance online. The tour is not included in general admission.

  • Families with children can enjoy Gladstone's Land, but it's advisable to supervise young ones due to the delicate nature of the artifacts.

  • On select dates, Gladstone's Land offers specialist tours covering a variety of topics, such as Intimate Lives: The History of Sex and Desire in Edinburgh's Old Town and the History of Tea. Book tickets online in advance.

How to get there

Gladstone's Land is conveniently located on the Royal Mile in Edinburgh's Old Town. It, along with numerous other historical attractions, can be easily reached on foot. Hop-on hop-off bus tours often stop directly outside the property. If using public transit, the closest train station is Edinburgh Waverley (10-minute walk), and the nearest bus stops are on the Mound and George IV Bridge. From each location, it's a short walk to the attraction.

When to get there

To experience Gladstone's Land with fewer people, consider arriving at opening time or in the late afternoon when the attraction is less busy. This allows you to explore the rooms at your own pace and absorb the historical atmosphere. Alternatively, for an educational experience, attend one of the daily afternoon tours. Check the National Trust Scotland website in advance for any closures or changes in operating hours.

Discover Edinburgh’s other hidden gems

If lesser-known attractions are up your (undiscovered) alley, then venture off the beaten path and discover Edinburgh’s enchanting corners on a hidden gems tour in Edinburgh. From tucked-away historical sites like the Palace of Holyroodhouse courtyards to hidden gardens, like Dunbars Close, along with a charming local café once frequented by J.K. Rowling, you’ll unveil the overlooked side of the city’s rich history and culture.
