Girona Arab Baths (Banys Arabs de Girona)
Carrer Ferran el Catòlic, Girona, Catalonia, 17004
Initially built in the 12th century, before being partially destroyed and then rebuilt, the Girona Arab Baths (Banys Àrabs de Girona) were inspired by Roman-style baths. Today, the small complex is a well-preserved example of medieval public baths, and features Romanesque elements, plus a series of four rooms where residents would bathe and socialize.
The basics
The baths consists of four main rooms: the Apodyterium, or changing room, with a central octagonal pool surrounded by columns; the Frigidarium, the cold room, cooled by rainwater; the Tepidarium, the warm room, where bathers could enjoy a meal, massage, or conversation; and the Caldarium, the hot room similar to a sauna that was connected to the furnace room. Stairs ascend to a rooftop offering sweeping views over the city.
The Girona Arab Baths are included as part of many Girona sightseeing tours, especially tours focused on Game of Thrones filming sites. Most tours include other Girona highlights, such as the Girona Cathedral, and can also be combined with other stops in Costa Brava.
Things to know before you go
The Arab Baths are a historic site, and are no longer functional as a public bath.
History, architecture, and engineering buffs, and fans of Game of Thrones will find the site of interest.
The site is not very accessible, with some steps in the main bath area, and a spiral staircase to access the rooftop.
How to get there
The Arab Baths are located on Carrer Ferran el Catòlic, between the Church of Sant Feliu and the city wall. The entrance can be found near the base of the Girona Cathedral. It’s easily accessible from many parts of Girona’s old city.
When to get there
The Arab Baths are open Monday to Saturday from mid-morning until late afternoon, and Sunday and bank holidays from mid-morning until mid-afternoon. The site is closed on December 24, 25, 25 and January 1 and 6. It should take less than 30 minutes to experience. The space is small and can fill up quickly. Visit early in the morning and mid week to avoid the crowds. It also provides a cool respite on a hot day.
Where to find *Game of Thrones* locations nearby
The Arab Baths appeared in Season 6, Episode 8 of the hit show, as a battle scene between Arya and the Waif. Girona is home to many filming sites for the show, standing in as the city of Braavos. Nearby locations include the Ferran el Catòlic Street and Archaeological Walk (Braavos Port Market) outside the baths and Girona Cathedral (Great Sept of Baelor).
