Fragata Dom Fernando II e Glória
Largo Alfredo Dinis, Cacilhas, Almada, Portugal, 2800-252
The historic Dom Fernando II e Glória frigate was Portugal’s last sailing warship. Featuring three masts and 50 cannons, the vessel has been restored to appear as it did when the Portuguese Navy launched it in 1843. The ship, now dry-docked just outside of Lisbon, is one of the best preserved examples of a wooden-hulled frigate in the world.
The Basics
The maiden voyage of theDom Fernando II e Glória was from Goa (where she was built) to Lisbon, and she sailed for 100,000 nautical miles across Asia and Africa until being decommissioned in 1878. After a fire destroyed most of its hull in the 1960s, the 8th-oldest warship in the world was restored to its former glory in the ’90s. Most half- and full-day Lisbon tours that explore the southern side of the Tagus river pass by the frigate.
