Located off the coast of Seward in Resurrection Bay, Fox Island is a popular sea kayaking and hiking destination. The island is largely mountainous and the coastline’s rocky coves are home to puffins, sea lions, seals, and more. The secluded island is also home to two state parks, Sandspit Point State Marine Park and Sunny Cove State Marine Park, and a high-end all-inclusive resort.
The Basics
Fox Island tours begin with a sightseeing cruise across Resurrection Bay. Upon arrival at Fox Island, you can choose between sea kayaking tours, hiking excursions, or just relaxing at the Fox Island Day Lodge. Tours often conclude with a buffet dinner of Alaskan favorites at the day lodge. If one day on the island is not enough, you can also book an overnight stay at one of the private waterfront cabins operated by Kenai Fjords Wilderness Lodge.

How to Get There
Fox Island is 12 miles (19 kilometers) south of Seward and only accessible by boat or water taxi. The island is only 3.4 miles (5.5 kilometers) long and 2 miles (3.2 kilometers) wide and there are no roads on the island. By foot and kayak are the only ways to explore the island.
When to Get There
Most Fox Island tours are only available from May through August. Both the Fox Island Day Lodge and the Kenai Fjords Wilderness Lodge are only open during the summer months. The state parks are open year-round on the island and water taxi service is available to the parks from Seward dependent on the weather. Overnight reservations at the Kenai Fjords Wilderness Lodge often need to be made a year in advance.
Fox Island Sea Kayaking
Fox Island is one of Alaska’s most popular sea kayaking destinations. Half-day and full-day kayaking tours are available on the island and include all necessary equipment including spray skirts, dry bags, and PFDs. No kayaking experience is necessary; tours are available for beginners and families to expert paddlers.
