The Basics
Formosan Aboriginal Culture Village is the country’s largest outdoor museum devoted to aboriginal culture. Check out the nine traditional villages—representing Taiwan’s main indigenous tribes—spread across a hillside. Then, wander the expansive grounds of the European garden, where you’ll find a palace, a bell tower, and several fountains. Finally, head over to Amusement Isle and play carnival games and ride roller coasters to your heart’s content.
The entrance fee to the village includes a ride on the Sun Moon Lake Ropeway. For a hassle-free experience, opt for a tour that offers round-trip transportation from your hotel in Taichung. Some multi-attraction passes include the village.

How to Get There
Located in Nantou County, the village is about a 2.5-hour drive from Taipei. Alternatively, take the THSR train to Taichung station, then the Nantou or Renyou bus to the Formosa Aboriginal Culture Village stop.
When to Get There
The village is open year-round. One of the most scenic (albeit more crowded) times to visit is during the cherry blossom season, around February and March. Go in March to see the lavender in bloom in the European garden.
Sun Moon Lake
Connected to Formosan Aboriginal Culture Village by a ropeway, Sun Moon Lake is the largest in Taiwan. It’s also one of the only natural lakes in the country and considered one of the prettiest. The area is popular for its beauty, outdoor recreation opportunities, and attractions such as temples and villages.
