POINT OF INTEREST

Forest Lawn Memorial Park (Hollywood Hills)

Manicured lawns dotted with flowers, fountains, and elegant statues make Forest Lawn Memorial Park feel like a garden in Italy, though it’s actually a sprawling cemetery in the Hollywood Hills. Surrounded by green hillsides with the San Gabriel Mountains in the distance, it has massive memorials and a mosaic honoring American history, as well as scenic spots for peaceful reflection and remembering those who have passed.

The basics

The cemetery is open daily, and you’re welcome to walk around the park, memorial areas, and churches at your own pace. The site also hosts free community events, such as vigils and holiday celebrations, throughout the year. Guided tours of the Hollywood Hills stop by the cemetery too, also including sights such as the Hollywood Sign, Griffith Observatory, and other neighborhood mainstays.

Things to know before you go

Unless you have a car, be prepared for lots of walking—the cemetery covers hundreds of acres. Napping and picnicking on the lawns and benches are not allowed. Photography is fine outdoors, but photos are prohibited inside the churches and other buildings.

How to get there

It’s easiest to get around this expansive cemetery by car. Enter at Forest Lawn Drive and Memorial Drive, then follow the roads that wind throughout the park. When you’re ready to get out and walk, stop along the street or in one of the lots. Public transportation is limited in this area, but rideshare apps are available.

When to get there

Busiest on the weekends, Forest Lawn Memorial Park is open every day from morning to early evening. Aim to visit between March and May or September and November for the sunniest skies and most pleasant temperatures. Of course, Los Angeles is known for great weather and Forest Lawn for its well-kept grounds, so you’re likely to enjoy your visit any time of year.

Celebrity gravesites at Forest Lawn Memorial Park

Famous figures including Bette Davis, Debbie Reynolds, Carrie Fisher, Brittany Murphy, and Matthew Perry are buried at Forest Lawn’s Hollywood Hills cemetery. For privacy reasons, staff members are unlikely to give out directions to celebrity gravesites. If you’d like to pay your respects at a specific grave, most burial locations can be found online.
