POINT OF INTEREST

Flagler College

74 King St., St. Augustine, FL

Though Flagler College was founded in 1968, some of the buildings that host its campus date back to 1888. It was previously a women’s college, then reorganized as a coed higher learning institution in 1971. Today, it’s a private liberal arts college offering primarily bachelor’s degrees, although it also has three master’s level degrees.

Flagler College is a private college in St. Augustine, but that doesn’t stop it from opening its doors to non-enrolled visitors. The site was originally a luxury hotel built by industrialist Henry Flagler. Its deep history with the city’s economic development makes it one of the most important sites in the city’s history. Tiffany stained-glass windows, vibrant murals, and tranquil gardens have earned recognition as one of the most beautiful universities in the United States.

  • Many trolley tours, including the hop-on/hop-off tour, visit Flagler College.

  • The site is often included in tours focusing on specific experiences, such as history tours, foodie walks, and pub tours.

  • The college is allegedly haunted, and many ghost tours investigate the paranormal activities around the campus.

  • Class is in session throughout the year, so please mind your manners when touring the campus’ interior.

  • Flagler College is a dry campus, so don’t bring alcohol onto school grounds.

Flagler College is located at 74 King Street, directly across from Plaza de la Constitution and one block west of the pedestrian throughway St. George St. You can walk to Flagler College from nearly any part of the historic district, and multiple paid parking lots are nearby. Many choose to see the campus while riding a horse-and-buggy, a privately rented golf cart, or on one of the tourist trolley routes.

Remember that Flagler College is an active college campus, so any visits during semesters will see crowds of coeds on top of tourists. You can walk around some exterior buildings on the West Lawn, though if you’re booking a historical tour, it’s highly recommended to pre-purchase your tickets as these slots fill up quickly.

Flagler College is one of the stars of the annual Night of Lights celebration. This illuminated event sees the historical center—businesses, public works, and residential homes adorned with shining glory. Visit via a stroll around the historic area, so live it up and rent a limousine for a private chauffeured experience.
