Fenton History Center
67 Washington St., Jamestown, NY
Learn Chautauqua County history and heritage at the Fenton History Center, a museum and research center run by the local history society. Inside an Italian villa-style mansion, find preserved period rooms and exhibits on topics ranging from local genealogy and the underground railroad to American actress Lucille Ball, born in Jamestown.
Admission tickets grant access to the museum and the adjacent Hall House Research Center, a full-service research library dedicated to local historical and genealogical research. Both buildings are worth a visit, with the former housed in an Italian-style villa that was once the residence of a prominent Jamestown family—inside, you’ll find graceful period rooms with historical artifacts, Victorian-era furnishings, and exhibits. Buy a ticket to tour at your own pace with a provided guide booklet.
Stop for a coffee or bite to eat at the museum café.
Children under 17 and historical society members enter for free.
A gift shop sells books, souvenirs, and handcrafted items.
Military veterans receive a free 1-year membership to the research library.
The history center lies on the north end of Fenton Park across the Chadakoin River from central Jamestown. From downtown, cross the river on Main Street or Washington Street and head to the intersection of Washington and Forest Avenue. The research library is on Forest Avenue, while the History Center is on Washington Street—both with free parking.
The history center is open Monday to Saturday from mid-morning to mid-afternoon. It closes on major federal holidays and for the last two weeks of January for cleaning and repairs. The research center is open Monday to Friday from mid-morning to mid-afternoon.
The Fenton History Center has an exhibition dedicated to Lucille Ball, the American actress and comedian of I Love Lucy fame who was born in Jamestown. Fans can find photographs and items highlighting her early life in the area, and head to the Lucille Ball Desi Arnaz Museum, which hosts costumes, set pieces, and an annual comedy festival in the Jamestown Historic Downtown District.
