Felipe Xicotencatl Shipwreck

Cancún, Mexico

Originally built as a World War II warship, the Felipe Xicotencatl was part of Mexico’s naval fleet for decades. It sunk off the Caribbean coast in 1999, and was later donated to Cozumel’s marine park as an artificial reef. Today, the Felipe Xicotencatl is part of a popular dive site and is home to corals and other marine life.

The basics

The best way to explore the site is by scuba diving, and many tour operators offer guided dives there. A basic swim-through is considered a relatively easy wreck dive, even for beginners; advanced divers can enter the ship’s lower engine room (with a waterproof diving headlamp). All divers will need open water diving certification in order to participate. Some operators also offer a snorkeling option; you’ll still be able to partially glimpse the ship from a distance.

Prefer to stay dry altogether? Then consider visiting the shipwreck in a submarine during an Atlantis tour. You may also spot schools of tropical fish, barracudas, lobsters, and even bottlenosed dolphins. Cozumel is home to the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, the world’s largest reef system after Australia’s Great Barrier Reef, and the area is renowned for its stunning underwater scenery and calm, crystal-clear waters.

Things to know before you go

  • Expect only mild currents and some natural light, making this an ideal site for newbie divers.

  • Not certified to dive yet? You can earn your certification right here in Cozumel, where diving schools offer training programs such as PADI.

  • You can safely explore multiple openings in the shipwreck. However, if you have a fear of confined spaces, don’t venture too deep, as some sections are narrow.

  • Don’t enter the lower section of the ship without extensive diving experience and proper gear.

  • Bring an underwater camera to capture corals, moray eels, schools of fish, crabs, sponges, and other colorful sea life.

  • The dive is suitable for teens and adults 15 and older. If you’re traveling with younger children, consider opting for the submarine ride instead.

How to get there

The Felipe Xicotencatl shipwreck lies at a depth of around 80 feet (24 meters). It’s located offshore from Chankanaab Adventure Beach Park, in an area that provides shelter from currents. Divers will need to take a boat from the shore to the wreck site, so the easiest option is to join a guided tour. Otherwise, take a submarine ride.

When to get there

The beauty of Cozumel is that the island is ideal for diving throughout most of the year; count on around 300 diveable days annually. For the warmest, calmest waters (as well as the fewest crowds) aim for May to September. Plan your trip from November to March for a better chance of spotting bull sharks or eagle rays. Divers and snorkelers can still spot sea turtles, corals, and tropical fish year-round.

Corals and cocktails at Chankanaab Adventure Beach Park

Snorkeling and diving equipment can be rented at Chankanaab Adventure Beach Park, home to a number of diving shops. Even better, you can celebrate a successful dive over a meal or shot of tequila at one of several beach-view restaurants, plus cabanas can be booked for groups of up to six people. Chankanaab is also equipped with a spa, children’s playground, souvenir shop, and showers and dressing rooms with lockers.
