Feira de Artesanato, Flores e Gastronomica (FEIMA)

Av. dos Mártires da Machava, Maputo, Mozambique

Feira de Artesanato, Flores e Gastronomica (FEIMA) is a popular and colorful open-air market in Maputo. Locals and tourists alike are drawn to the market for its array of locally-made crafts, including wooden sculptures, traditional masks, jewelry, textiles, and paintings.

The basics

Vendors and artisans come from all across Mozambique to sell their wares in Maputo. Colorful capulanas—traditional fabrics worn by women in Mozambique—are popular purchases at FEIMA, which you’ll find used in everything from sarongs to sandals, book covers and earrings. You can also buy food, as well as plants and flowers. FEIMA is a popular stop on walking tours of Maputo, including those that are focused on the city’s art and architecture.

Things to know before you go

  • Stallholders expect shoppers to negotiate over prices. Bargain, but be mindful of offering a fair price for artisans’ work.

  • To avoid feeling pressured by sellers, don’t touch items unless you are really interested in buying them.

  • When you’re finished shopping, you can refuel with a bite to eat at one of the market’s food stalls.

  • There is no admission fee.

How to get there

The market is located on Maputo’s Av. Martires da Machava, less than a 5-minute walk from the Polana Serena Hotel, and a 10-minute walk from the Palace of Marriages. From Maputo Railway Station, it’s around a 10-minute drive and parking is available at the market.

When to get there

The Feira de Artesanato, Flores e Gastronomica is open every day, from early morning until late afternoon/early evening. Visiting early allows you to avoid the biggest crowds, but you may find that vendors are at the pushiest, or most eager, at the beginning of the day.

Food

Foodies will delight in the range of local and international foods on offer at FEIMA. In the center of the market, a wide variety of vendors serve up typical Mozambican dishes, such as grilled shrimp and peri-peri chicken, as well as fare from other African countries and beyond. It’s a great opportunity to sample diverse flavors.
