POINT OF INTEREST

Featherdale Wildlife Park

217-229 Kildare Road, Doonside, Sydney, New South Wales

Located just outside Sydney, Featherdale Wildlife Park is home to one of the largest collections of Australian wildlife anywhere in the world. Visitors can see and learn about the park’s 1,700 native Aussie critters, including koalas, kangaroos, echidnas, saltwater crocodiles, emus, and some of the world’s most venomous snakes.

Guided feeding sessions are quite popular here. Animal food is available for purchase throughout the park, and Featherdale staff members are on hand to assist in feeding kangaroos, wallabies, and pademelons. Guides can also provide insight into the park’s conservation efforts, highlighting the work done to reintroduce endangered species into the wild, and the park’s ongoing research into some of Australia’s most intriguing yet lesser-known fauna.

Visitors can also participate in supervised animal encounters, even getting their photo taken with koalas, quokka, and other animals. The park’s “Zookeeper for the Day” program allows children to accompany a zookeeper to learn about animal diets. Featherdale Wildlife Park is a typical stop on full- and half-day tours from Sydney to the Blue Mountains: These usually include the price of admission and save you the trouble of driving to and from the park.

  • The park is wheelchair- and stroller-accessible. Guests planning to visit with a service dog should contact the park 48 hours in advance.

  • In accordance with New South Wales laws, guests are not allowed to hold koalas.

  • The Featherdale Café is located at the top of the park and serves hot food, as well as snacks and drinks.

  • The park offers shaded picnic tables for guests.

Featherdale Wildlife Park is roughly 40 minutes west of Sydney by car. By public transit, take the Blue Mountains Line/T1 train from the Central Station to Blacktown—after that, it’s a 10-minute ride on the #729 bus to the park gates.

Featherdale Wildlife Park is open from midmorning to late afternoon every day of the year including public holidays, except for Christmas Day. Plan for two hours to an entire day for a visit. The park is typically busiest on weekends and holidays.

It requires a substantial additional fee, but the park’s croc deck encounter (offered on Saturdays and Sundays for a maximum of two guests who are over 16 years old) includes exclusive access to Featherdale’s crocodile enclosure. Supervised by a Featherdale keeper at all times, guests are escorted onto the viewing deck to feed the resident saltwater crocodile.
