Falconeria Locarno
Via delle Scuole 12, Locarno, Switzerland, 6600
Bird enthusiasts and nature lovers will enjoy the chance to get up close to birds of prey at Falconeria Locarno. Dressed in medieval-inspired costumes, trained handlers put on shows with majestic eagles, hawks, owls, vultures, marabous, and ibis. Visitors can view the aviaries after the show, and kids can take pony rides.
The Basics
Most travelers visit Falconeria Locarno independently, and though it’s possible to buy tickets at the entrance, it’s a good idea to prepurchase them during school holidays to avoid disappointment. With a convenient location close to town, this fun and informative attraction is an easy addition to any Locarno sightseeing itinerary. Much of Locarno dates from the 12th century, and the park’s bird handlers bring the town’s history and traditions into the shows.
Things to Know Before You Go
The 1-hour demonstrations are held in German and Italian, but visitors who don’t understand these languages can still enjoy seeing the birds.
Seating for the shows is outdoors, but there’s a sun shade for the summer and heating in the winter.
Entry tickets include the show and admission to the park.
Tickets can be paid for in Swiss francs or Euros.
The park is wheelchair-accessible.
How to Get There
The park is just south of central Locarno, about a 10-minute walk south of the castle. Free car parking is available for visitors, or you can take bus 311 from FFS Locarno to Palazzo Fevi.
When to Get There
Opening hours and daily performance times at Falconeria Locarno vary depending on the season. In the winter, the park is only open in the afternoon, and there is one show per day. In the summer, it’s open all day and there are morning and afternoon performances. The Falconeria is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays in winter and Mondays in summer.
Visit Visconti Castle (Castello Visconteo)
While in Locarno, don’t miss Castello Visconteo, a short walk from the Falconeria. Dating from the 14th century, the castle ruins house a museum that displays artifacts from Roman times, including glass that testifies to Locarno’s role as a glassmaking center.
