Fado in Chiado

Rua da Misericórdia 14, Chiado, Lisbon, Portugal, 1200-443

Fado is Portugal's most celebrated performing art, and it's showcased almost every evening atFado in Chiado. This live show introduces the musical form to audiences from around the world and features a singer and two instrumentalists: one playing Portuguese guitar, the other, classical guitar.

The Basics

Lasting about an hour, theFado in Chiado show showcases the genre of fado, the national song tradition of Portugal and part of the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list. During the performance, images of iconic Lisbon attractions appear on a screen behind musicians, while the vocalist croons about themes related tosaudade, which roughly translates to “melancholic longing.” While food isn’t served here, some packages include dinner with the show.

Fado in Chiado* is a must-do for anyone interested in music or the arts.

  • Unlike many fado performances, which take place in taverns, Fado in Chiado is set in a theater.

  • Kids under age 4 are not allowed, while those age 4–6 get free entry.

How to Get There

Fado in Chiado is located in the historic Baixi District of Lisbon, about a 2-minute walk west of the Baixa–Chiado metro station and a 10-minute walk from the Cais do Sodré train station. As the area is largely pedestrianized, with limited parking, it's easier to come here by taxi or public transportation rather than by car.

When to Get There

Fado in Chiado is open throughout the year from Monday through Saturday, except on some holidays. Each session starts at 7pm, but it's a good idea to arrive half an hour early to get good seats, as the venue operates on an open-seating policy.

Characteristics of Fado

Portugal's most celebrated art form, fado is characterized by songs dominated by melancholic themes, often (but not always) performed by female vocalists. Accompanying instruments include classical guitars, Portuguese guitars, and viola baixos, a local spin on an acoustic bass. While fado is believed to have originated in Lisbon, there's also a style from the city of Coimbra that's only performed by men.
