POINT OF INTEREST

Eyüp

Eyüp District, Istanbul, Turkey, 34100

Eyup is a sacred district in Istanbul that has been a pilgrimage site for centuries. A visit here offers a glimpse into the spiritual side of Istanbul and its cultural heritage. It’s home to the Eyup Sultan Mosque (arguably the holiest sight in the city), local markets, Pierre Loti Hill, and outstanding panoramic views of Istanbul.

The basics

Despite the Eyup district’s significant history, landmarks, and culture, foreign visitors often overlook it. However, the family-friendly area is highly walkable, and its highlights can be enjoyed in half a day. While in the area, it's essential to take the cable car or hike up to Pierre Loti Cafe to enjoy Turkish tea or coffee. For a more enriching sightseeing experience, visitors may consider an organized tour of the area, which usually includes round-trip transportation and local guides.

Things to know before you go

  • As Eyup is a religiously significant and conservative area, it's important to dress modestly. Both men and women should cover their shoulders and knees when visiting mosques.
  • Plan your visit to any of the district’s mosques around prayer times (which vary daily), as they are closed to visitors during these times.
  • If you plan to visit any of the Eyup district’s markets, bring cash and don’t hesitate to haggle. Before making any purchases, be aware of the exchange rate in your local currency.
  • Eyup is a popular area for tourists and locals, so it can get quite crowded, especially during religious holidays.

How to get there

Istanbul’s Eyup district is easily reached by public transportation, including over a dozen buses and the T5 tramline. However, the most scenic option is to take a ferry along the Golden Horn from Eminonu to the Eyup ferry terminal. Many organized tours also offer convenient round-trip transportation from central Istanbul hotels.

When to get there

The Eyüp Sultan Mosque and Tomb are open daily from sunrise to sunset, while the district’s local markets operate on weekdays from morning until late afternoon. Therefore, visiting the neighborhood early in the day or during weekdays is best to avoid crowds. Remember that because of the iconic mosque, Eyup is especially busy during Muslim holidays, including the end of Ramadan (Eid al-Fitr) and the Feast of the Sacrifice (Eid al-Adha).

An auditory experience to remember

Don't miss the chance to take a ferry along Istanbul’s Golden Horn and see Eyup from a different perspective. If possible, time your journey with the Call to Prayer and enjoy dozens of mosques echoing across the historic waterway. Organized boat tours along the Golden Horn often include the Bosphorus and live commentary to bring richness and context to the sightseeing experience.
