Ethnographic Museum “Borjgalo”

14 მ. შარაშიძის ქუჩა, Batumi, GA

Everything seen at the ethnographic museum “Borjgalo” can be traced back to a single source—the creator Mr. Kemal Turmanidze. Stereotypical agricultural life in the Adjara region is displayed throughout this open-air private museum with model buildings, woodwork, and other folk handicrafts. Here you can learn about the different cultural and societal roles people once took on in the region surrounding Batumi.

The basics

With its location well outside the city center of Batumi, the Ethnographic Museum “Borjgalo” is rarely included in local sightseeing tours. Entry to the museum includes a guided tour—available in Georgian, English, and Russian—where you’ll learn about traditional life in the Adjara region. Expect to spend roughly 30 minutes visiting the museum before returning to the city center, as there’s little more for tourists to see in this part of Batumi.

Things to know before you go

  • The museum suits anyone interested in culture, but also those passionate about handicrafts and woodworking.

  • A small parking lot directly outside the entrance is available if you arrive by car.

  • Admission is only payable by cash.

How to get there

The Ethnographic Museum “Borjgalo” is located on the southern outskirts of Batumi, not far from Batumi International Airport. Some minibus routes, known locally as marshrutka, head towards the museum from the city center, but do check before boarding. Otherwise, travelers will need to travel by car or organize a taxi or rideshare, as the museum is about a 20-minute drive from Batumi city center.

When to get there

The Ethnographic Museum “Borjgalo” is open daily during regular business hours. As it sits outside the city center, don’t expect it to ever get too busy. Much of the museum is outdoors, so visiting on rainy or colder days may not be very appealing.

Batumi museums to visit as a tourist

While the Ethnographic Museum is a very specific private museum, there are city museums where you can learn more broadly about Batumi. The Batumi Archaeological Museum explores the city’s ancient past and the excavations that continue to reveal it, while the Khariton Akhvlediani Museum Of Ajara covers everything from the region’s natural history to ethnography. The Adjara Art Museum is the place to go for those curious about local art history.
